Follow Highway 35: A Scenic Day Trip North

Spring in the Haliburton Highlands is the perfect time to hit the road. As rivers run high and landscapes come back to life, a day trip through the region offers a mix of scenic stops, outdoor adventure, and small-town charm, all within a relaxed drive.

Start: Trails along the Moving Water

Begin your day at the Minden White Water Preserve (MWWP). This natural whitewater park draws paddlers from across Ontario, but it’s just as rewarding for visitors on foot. Trails on both sides of the river offer great vantage points to watch the rushing water. The west side (Harington Park) trails tend to be more rugged and narrow, while the east side (MWWP) offers a wider, more gradual path with some gentle hills, making it accessible for a range of visitors. Plan to spend an hour or two here, taking in the views and the energy from both sides before continuing your day.

Midday: Scenic Stops North Along Highway 35

Heading north on Highway 35, make a stop in Carnarvon at Haliburton Highlands Brewing for a refreshing break. A cold drink and a quick bite on the patio make it an ideal midday stop. Not far up the road, Buttermilk Falls lets you soak in some history. Long a favourite picnic spot, the falls remain one of the region’s most scenic roadside attractions. If time allows, continue on to Hawk Lake Log Chute, where a short riverside trail and interpretive signage tell the story of the area’s logging past.

Finish: Small-Town Charm in Minden

Loop back south to the Village of Minden, set along the Gull River. A unique Riverwalk pathway follows the water and connects via a footbridge, creating an easy loop that brings you back into the downtown core. The boardwalk leads toward the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, home to the largest collection of works by Canadian artist André Lapine.

To wrap up the day, settle in at a local favourite like the Dominion Hotel or Boshkung Brewing Co. for a well-earned meal or drink, and if timing is on your side, you might catch some live music, as both venues are known for their vibrant entertainment schedules.

From rushing rivers to quiet trails and welcoming patios, a day trip through the Haliburton Highlands is an easy way to experience the season, one stop at a time. Learn more at myhaliburtonhighlands.com/waterfalls/
