As designers, we always get a little laugh that some of the most important spaces in a legacy cottage are the ones guests rarely notice. Mudrooms, pantries, laundry rooms, closets and the storage and lifestyle solutions they provide play a significant role in how effortlessly a home functions. These behind-the-scenes spaces help support busy weekends, large family gatherings, and seasonal transitions, allowing the more visible areas of the home to remain calm, welcoming, and organized.
Material selections also deserve careful consideration. While trends may come and go, legacy properties benefit from design choices and durable materials that age gracefully. Quality millwork, natural fabrics, thoughtfully selected flooring, and classic architectural details provide both longevity and enduring appeal. The goal is not simply to create a home that looks beautiful today, but one that will continue to feel relevant and inviting decades from now.
Perhaps most importantly, legacy properties are designed to foster connection. Whether it’s a spacious kitchen that encourages conversation, a dining area large enough for holiday celebrations, or an outdoor living space overlooking the water, these homes are intentionally planned around bringing people together.
