A Summer of Arts, Culture & Music

Summer in the Haliburton Highlands is often celebrated for its lakes, forests, and outdoor adventures, but visitors may be surprised to discover a thriving arts and culture scene. With live theatre, hands-on creative experiences, and music filling patios, parks, and concert venues, there is truly something for everyone. While there are countless events and performances to choose from, here are a few that I am particularly looking forward to this summer.

Take in a Show: Highlands Summer Festival

For more than two decades, the Highlands Summer Festival has been bringing professional-quality live theatre to Haliburton County. This year’s “Made in Canada” season features Anne of Green Gables, Doris and Ivy in the Home, Yo and My Shadow, Too Many Cooks, and a concert by Leisa Way and the Wayward Wind Band. As a singer-songwriter myself, the production I am most excited about is Anne of Green Gables. It’s a timeless Canadian classic that brings together local talent and professional performers, making it a perfect introduction to the festival for visitors and residents alike.

Get Creative: Haliburton School of Art + Design

The Haliburton School of Art + Design offers an impressive selection of workshops and courses in everything from ceramics and jewellery design to painting, music, and podcasting. Whether you’re looking to develop a new skill or simply explore a creative interest, there is no shortage of options. Two courses that caught my attention are the Ukulele workshops and Find Your Voice Intensive with Lizzy Clarke. As someone who enjoys writing and performing music, both offer an opportunity to learn from experienced instructors while connecting with other creative people in a beautiful setting.

Hear the Music: Pubs, Porches & Playhouses

One of my favourite summer traditions is taking in live music around the Highlands. With more than 175 performances expected throughout the season, there is always something happening. While venues across the region offer everything from folk and country to rock and blues, I particularly enjoy the Sunday Jazz sessions at the Dominion Hotel. Sitting back with a refreshing Caesar and listening to talented musicians on a summer afternoon is a simple reminder that some of the best experiences are often the most relaxing.

From theatre and visual arts to live music under the stars, the Haliburton Highlands offers a cultural experience as diverse as its landscape. Whether you’re looking to learn something new, enjoy a performance, or simply relax and take it all in, you’ll find plenty of ways to be inspired this summer.
