Lakefield is one of the prettiest communities in the Kawarthas, known for its charming downtown, excellent shopping, and inviting small-town atmosphere. Visitors will find everything from unique boutiques and artisan goods to cafés, bakeries, and everyday essentials.
The town is perhaps best known for Lakefield College School, the internationally recognized private school. Over the years, Lakefield has become a favourite retreat for retirees and cottagers who first discover the area through summer visits and later return permanently.
Lakefield also has a rich artistic and literary heritage. It hosts an annual literary festival each July and has connections to notable Canadian cultural figures including Catharine Parr Traill, Margaret Laurence, and the acclaimed musical family Leahy.
One of the town’s highlights is its scenic boardwalk along the Otonabee River, where visitors can enjoy peaceful natural areas filled with birdsong and beautiful waterfront views. Outdoor enthusiasts can also explore kilometres of hiking and cycling routes thanks to connections between the Millennium Trail, the Peterborough County Rotary Greenway Trail, and the Trans Canada Trail.
Boaters arriving through Lock 26 on the Trent–Severn Waterway are only a short walk from the downtown core. There, visitors can browse art galleries, bookstores, gift shops, and clothing boutiques before settling in for a memorable meal at one of the town’s restaurants or cafés. As you explore, take time to admire the many beautifully preserved homes and churches dating back to the 1800s.
Cenotaph Park is a perfect place to relax in the shade while enjoying views of Memorial Hall and its colourful flower gardens. Nearby ice cream shops make it an especially pleasant stop on a warm summer day.
For more waterfront scenery, visit Isabel Morris Park beside the arena complex. Its pavilion, playground, and skate park all overlook the river and provide excellent spots to unwind and take in the view.
Another popular summer destination is Lakefield Beach on Hague Point, a favourite place to cool off on hot days. The nearby recreation complex also features tennis courts and additional community facilities, making it a lively hub for both residents and visitors.
