Explore Cameron / Coboconk
For fans of lakes and parks, a trip up Hwy. 35 north from the town of Lindsay will treat you to the best of both worlds. East of Cameron, on County Road 34, stop in to enjoy Long Beach and Daytona Beach on the shores of Sturgeon Lake.
As boats travel from Balsam to Cameron Lakes, they cut through Lock 35 at the pretty hamlet of Rosedale, which is another lovely place for a pit stop.
Hikers will enjoy getting out on a portion of the 85-kilometre Victoria Rail Trail, which skirts Sturgeon Lake and Cameron Lake along the way. The trail beckons whether you are on foot or even on your horse. The trail runs from Bethany to Kinmount, via Lindsay, so you can explore a portion of it on every visit to the area. It is based on the CN rail line built in 1874.
However, the parks near Coboconk will get you back on the road. Balsam Park Provincial Park fills up a day on its own with a fabulous beach, boat rentals or access to launch your own. After fishing and a swim in the clear water, go for a walk on its trails or set up camp for the night. Meanwhile, Indian Head Provincial Park offers no amenities, but welcomes you to explore the undeveloped shoreline and its limestone alvar.
In town, check out the smallest jail in Canada, now known as Ye Olde Jail. Its creator originally left a few blocks without mortar for easy escapes! Its shops and restaurants also entice visitors in from the parks, offering great food and other delights. Rosie’s Dockside Restaurant, Bar and Grill is famous for both its breakfasts and its Thursday Wing Nights. Their menu has something for everyone.
Stick around for go-kart rides and mini-putt, which every member of the family can enjoy.
