At Monaghan Lumber – A flooring sample is usually where the conversation starts

You hold it up to the light, run a hand over the finish, and picture it in a kitchen, hallway, or living room. It helps narrow down colour, grain, and the feeling you want in a space. But choosing a floor is also about confidence. Will it hold up? Is the finish right for the way the room will be used? Is the value there?

Recently, several newer members of our team travelled with Jody, our General Manager, to visit the Preverco factory in Quebec. Preverco is one of the flooring brands we supply at Monaghan Lumber, and the tour gave our team a closer look at the details that shape the product before it ever reaches our showroom.

Inside the factory, the process is much more thoughtful than a finished sample can show. The wood is dried, graded, cut, repaired, sanded, stained, finished, and tested with purpose. Even the drying stage takes patience. Oak can spend more than 30 days in a kiln, while maple typically takes closer to 20 days. With white oak continuing to be a popular choice, Preverco has adapted parts of its process to support demand while still protecting the quality of the material.

The finishing process added another layer to that understanding. A floor needs to be durable enough for everyday life, but the finish also has to be balanced so it does not become too brittle or too soft. Stain matching is affected by the wood species, finish, and UV curing process, which helps explain why products that seem similar at first glance can perform and age differently over time.

Details like material sourcing, Quebec red pine engineered cores, and GREENGUARD Gold certification also stood out. They are not always the first things someone asks about when looking at flooring, but they all contribute to the quality, performance, and trust behind the product.

This is why supplier training matters at Monaghan Lumber. Our team learns through in-house sessions, product education, and factory tours so we can understand more than what is printed on a spec sheet. When customers are choosing flooring, that depth of knowledge helps us ask better questions, explain the differences clearly, and guide them toward a product that makes sense for their home.
