Pups give up inheritance to support less fortunate fur-friends

Peterborough-based pups, Sammy Lockington and Aube Barrie recently announced that they will both be donating their inheritance to Our Pet Project, the Peterborough Humane Society’s campaign to build its new Animal Care Centre. The two dogs and their families pledged $25,000 towards the new Centre, which will set a new standard in animal welfare in Canada. Aube, is a rescue dog himself, and his family is excited about the opportunities that the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre will offer dogs like Aube, who need a second chance in life.

“Research has shown that pets make us happier and healthier, lowering blood pressure, helping us keep a healthy weight, alleviating depression, supporting people living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Autism, Alzheimer’s and much more. At Peterborough Humane Society, Our Pet Project is our way of thanking pets for making us healthier and happier by helping them become healthier and happier,” says Shawn Morey, Executive Director at Peterborough Humane Society.

The new Animal Care Centre will help more pets get or stay healthy; find their perfect people and continue the virtuous cycle of health and happiness together. In turn, this

will help make the community happier and healthier by bringing new jobs, national attention and new resources to Peterborough.

“Our purpose-built Adoption and Education Centre is designed with our animals’ well-being in mind. Each animal will be provided with more space and natural light, while the design of the kennels will significantly reduce noise levels, decreasing animals’ stress while in our care” says Morey.

The space will be open and inviting, serving as a community hub and allowing for expansion of the Humane Society’s outreach, education and advocacy programs, including plans for youth programming and educational partnerships with both Trent University and Fleming College.

Both families are particularly excited about the purpose-built dog kennels. In the new Centre, dog kennels will be arranged in pods of four to aid in noise and stress reduction. These kennels will be significantly larger than the current kennels, at 6 by 10 feet each, and will be interlinked with guillotine doors to allow for kennels to double in size, should the need arise (e.g. bonded dogs that need to stay together). Each glass-fronted kennel will also have its own outside area (8 by 10 feet), allowing dogs to enjoy both outdoor and indoor spaces.

“We are well on our way towards making Our Pet Project a reality, with over 66% of funds raised. We encourage our community to get involved and make it YOUR pet project – donate in honour of a beloved pet, like Sammy and Aube’s families did, leave a gift in your will, or make a gift of securities. Each donation brings us a step closer to building our Peterborough Animal Care Centre,” says Morey.

The Peterborough Animal Care Centre is a shovel-ready project with all planning approvals, permits and tender documents in place. According to the building schedule prepared by Lett Architects, it will take 12 to 18 months to complete the project. We are working hard to start building in the fall this year, with construction anticipated to be complete in winter 2021.
